The Worst Foods To Eat When You Are Sic

We all know that chicken broth and lots of liquids should be the go-to diet when a pesky cold comes along, but no one’s ever said anything about the worst foods to eat when sick.
But now there’s no more wondering whether or not you should eat with a cold. Experts have opened up about the specific foods that fuel your cold symptoms. And since not every illness is the same, they’ve broken it down to the worst foods that trigger common symptoms.

FOODS TO AVOID TO RELIEVE 8 COMMON COLD SYMPTOMS

DIARRHEA

It could be caused by a stomach virus or a bad meal, but whatever the cause, you do not want this smelly symptom to linger.
Avoid: Artificial sweeteners, including sorbitol found in sugarless gum. These aren’t digestible, which means they may have an explosive effect on your body. The gas and bloating that accompany diarrhea could also be avoided by eliminating onions, broccoli, and beans.
If symptoms continue for two weeks, see a doctor immediately.

CONSTIPATION

On the opposite end, you might be blocked up, which is a direct result of not eating enough fiber. Try eating nuts, beans, or flaxseed to stimulate digestion.
Avoid: Iron supplements, dairy products, and chocolate. Some pain and anti-depression medications also worsen constipation, so talk to your doctor if you’re experiencing constipation while taking medication.

NAUSEA AND VOMITING

Eating the right foods can help relieve your nausea, even if you don’t feel like eating. Ginger, peppermint, and dry foods like saltine crackers and toast will ease your queasy stomach.
Avoid: Drinking alcohol, soda, or caffeine and eating spicy and greasy or oily foods.

SORE THROAT

This symptom can make it hurt to swallow and while some foods like yogurt, mashed potatoes, and custards can soothe the pain, there are other foods you should avoid completely.
Avoid: Hot drinks, including soup and broth, and acidic liquids like orange juice and lemonade.

BODY ACHES

A common symptom of cold and flu viruses, body aches can leave you feeling weak and tired. Try eating foods high in calcium and magnesium, like bananas or leafy greens, to lessen the pain.
Avoid: Dehydrating foods and liquids such as caffeine and alcohol. Salty and dry foods may also tighten muscles and worsen body aches.

HEADACHE

A headache could spring up at any time, even if you’re not sick. Don’t be caught off guard during your day by drinking lots of water and watching what you eat.
Avoid: Aged cheese, MSG found in soy sauce, chocolate, deli meats, and red wine. Artificial sweeteners also play a huge part in causing your headache, so try opting for natural sugars instead, like maple syrup.

RUNNY NOSE

Probably the worst symptom, a runny nose could leave you dealing with multiple other pains like congestion and a dry nose.
Avoid: alcohol and spicy foods.
